The scholarship, named in honor of Dr. Miriam and Mr. Sheldon G. Adelson and Family, are awarded to those individuals with an impeccable academic and community service record. Each year six to eight worthy students are awarded a four year scholarship to further their academic interests and professional goals. The 2010 recipients of the Adelson and Adelson Family scholarships are Fitsum Ayele, Brittaney Benson – Townsend, Florence Fernandez, Ian Weng Lam, John Ong, and Genica Felise Sicat.

The following series of pictures highlight a reception held in their honor by Dr. and Mr. Adelson following the Public Education Foundation’s Scholarship awards luncheon.

Tribute to the Troops
Tribute to the Troops is a signature event hosted by the Sands Foundation that salutes the wounded warriors that have fought to defend our freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan. Troops from several of the military hospitals in the United States are treated to a four day “thank you” for their service to our country. The troops were entertained by Clint Black, the Lt. Dan Band, Terry Fator, and Blue Man Group as well as got to see several aspects of the Strip and the Southern Nevada area. Proceeds from a special performance of the Blue Man Group in the troops honor were donated to ThanksUSA.

Adopt-A-School 2010
The Sands Foundation donated $10,000 worth of computers to Elbert B. Edwards Elementary School. The computers helped replace computers that were deemed Beyond Economical Repair. As part of the Foundation’s efforts to stimulate student excitement, The Venetian’s Gondoliers sang and passed out cookies to the kids when the computers were delivered and installed at the school. The Sands Foundation worked with the Clark County School District Community Partnership Program to identify a school in need of a community corporation that could help the educational efforts of the school district. The computers will have dual roles in teaching English as a second language to students of the school during the day and to the community after school hours.

Thanksgiving Meal Distribution 2010
This Thanksgiving, the Sands Foundation helped 275 families enjoy a nice Thanksgiving meal. Team members of the Venetian and Palazzo distributed these food items to the families directly in several spots throughout the Las Vegas area. The Foundation worked with Assemblyman Harvey Munford to identify those in the great need within the Southern Nevada area.

Adopt-A-Family 2010
During each Holiday Season, the Sands Foundation partners with HELP of Southern Nevada for its Adopt -A-Family program. Several departments throughout the Venetian and Palazzo adopt families and provide holiday gifts for families in need who would otherwise go without presents under the tree during the holiday season. Over 30 families were adopted by various Venetian and Palazzo departments this year to make the holiday season a little brighter for those in need. HELP of Southern Nevada, a local non-profit organization, was founded by the Junior League of Las Vegas and has been around since 1970. It provides resources throughout the year to help the poor, homeless, and those in crisis within the Southern Nevada community. The Sands Foundation is proud to support this local organization.
